12 Ways to Save on Household Expenses

Every person who is “truly rich” – or strives to be so – most likely knows the importance of saving money.

After all, money doesn’t grow on trees, as they say, and every hard-earned centavo saved goes a long way, especially when invested in the right instruments.

Bearing this in mind, we share with you 12 practical ways to save on your household expenses:

1. Unplug all your electrical appliances when you’re not using them. This helps you save on your electricity bill.

2. Always switch off the lights when you’re not using them. This simple energy-saving act is not only good for the environment; it’s good for your wallet too.

3. When cooking, cut food into small pieces so that it will cook faster. The premise here is energy saved = money saved on gas (or electricity, if you’re using an electric stove).

4. Limit your water usage as much as possible. E.g. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth; instead of showering, use a tabo (dipper) and pail when bathing.

5. Assess whether you really need to have cable TV; many families can survive without it. The money you will save on monthly cable subscriptions can be a good addition to your emergency fund and/or investments.

6. When shopping for groceries, always keep an eye out for good deals and offers on the items you usually buy.

7. Have regular “screen-free times” with your family. Switch off the TV and other electronic gadgets and read, play and have fun together. This saves energy and money, plus gives you the chance to deepen your relationships with one another.

8. Learn to do things yourself. Brush up on your DIY (do-it-yourself) skills and do minor home repairs and maintenance jobs on your own.

9. Drink more water and stop buying “colored” drinks like iced tea and juice, which are not that healthy for you anyway. (Although it is ok to indulge every so often, of course!)

10. When buying something for your household, always ask yourself this question: “Need or want?” Sometimes what we perceive as “essentials” aren’t really that important, or have cheaper alternatives.

11. When it comes to household cleaners, try making your own – vinegar and baking soda are just two of the ingredients you’ll need for a clean home. (Try searching the Internet for more ideas for DIY cleaners.)

12. If you need to invest in appliances, furniture or other equipment for your home, try looking for pre-loved items first. You can start by browsing through online sites like OLX.ph.

The aforementioned are certainly not the only ways you can save on your household expenses – there are so many other things you can do if you set your mind to it (and do the necessary research).

Whether you incorporate all or a few of these money-saving tips, remember what matters most: your commitment to having a “millionaire mindset” – and yes, it includes knowing how to save every peso you can!
